Title: Annual Salary Calculator: Hourly to Salary (Australia)
Last updated: 2026-11-06

This annual salary calculator converts an hourly rate into a yearly salary, or a salary back into an hourly rate, for any weekly hours. It shows annual, monthly, fortnightly and weekly pay after 2026-27 [ATO resident tax rates](https://www.ato.gov.au/tax-rates-and-codes/tax-rates-australian-residents). $42.50 an hour over 38 hours is **$83,980** a year.

| $42.50 an hour, 38 hours | Before tax | After tax |
|---|---|---|
| Year | $83,980.00 | $66,586.40 |
| Month | $6,998.33 | $5,548.87 |
| Fortnight | $3,230.00 | $2,561.02 |
| Week | $1,615.00 | $1,280.51 |

The calculator accepts any hours and weeks, so part-time and casual patterns convert the same way. Other cycles and pay changes are covered by the [salary and pay calculators](https://calculatax.com/salary/).

## The formula: hourly rate × hours × 52

Annual salary equals the hourly rate times weekly hours times 52. The reverse is salary ÷ (hours × 52).

$42.50 × 38 hours = $1,615 a week, and $1,615 × 52 = $83,980 a year. Income tax is $15,714 and the Medicare levy is $1,679.60, so total tax is $17,393.60 and take-home pay is $66,586.40. Dividing $83,980 by 1,976 gets you back to $42.50.

- **1,976**: Paid hours a year (A 38-hour week over 52 weeks)
- **$33.70**: Each hour after tax ($66,586.40 ÷ 1,976)
- **68 cents**: Kept from each extra dollar (The other 32 cents go to the 30% tax rate and the 2% Medicare levy)

### The minimum wage, HELP and part-time hours

The full-time minimum wage of $26.44 an hour works out to $52,245.44 a year on the same formula ([Fair Work Ombudsman minimum wage release](https://www.fairwork.gov.au/newsroom/media-releases/2026-media-releases/july-2026/20260701-minimum-wage-increase-media-release)). The official weekly figure of $1,004.90 gives $52,254.80, because the hourly rate is rounded to the cent.

With a HELP debt, the compulsory repayment on $83,980 is $2,167.80, which is 15 cents for each dollar above $69,528. Take-home pay drops to $64,418.60.

For part-time hours, enter your actual weekly hours. At 22.8 hours a week, $42.50 an hour is $50,388 a year.

### Day rates and fewer paid weeks

A standard full-time day is 7.6 hours (38 ÷ 5). A day rate converts to hourly by dividing by 7.6, so $323 a day is $42.50 an hour and $83,980 over 260 working days.

Contractors who are paid only for the weeks they work should change the weeks input. At $42.50 for 38 hours over 48 weeks, gross income is $77,520 instead of $83,980.

## 38 or 40 hours: the yearly difference

Two extra hours a week at $42.50 add $4,420 a year before tax and $3,005.60 after it.

| $42.50 an hour | 38 hours | 40 hours | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly gross | $1,615.00 | $1,700.00 | $85.00 |
| Annual gross | $83,980.00 | $88,400.00 | $4,420.00 |
| Tax and Medicare | $17,393.60 | $18,808.00 | $1,414.40 |
| Annual take-home | $66,586.40 | $69,592.00 | $3,005.60 |
| Weekly take-home | $1,280.51 | $1,338.31 | $57.80 |
| Employer super (12%) | $10,077.60 | $10,608.00 | $530.40 |

*2026-27 resident rates, no HELP debt. Source: ATO.*

Check which figure your contract uses. A job advertised at "$88,400" may assume 40 hours, which is $42.50 an hour. The same $88,400 over 38 hours is $44.74 an hour.

### Awards and overtime on the extra hours

Your modern award sets the minimum hourly rate for your classification, and the Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides that list them. Hours above your ordinary hours may count as overtime under the same award. Overtime at time and a half on $42.50 is $63.75 an hour, so two hours of paid overtime would be worth more than two ordinary hours.

## Casual rates include 25% loading: comparing with a permanent salary

A casual rate already includes a 25% loading that replaces paid leave. Divide a casual rate by 1.25 to compare it with a permanent rate. $50 casual ÷ 1.25 = $40 base, so $50 casual and $40 permanent pay the same base rate.

| 38 hours a week | Casual $50 | Permanent $40 |
|---|---|---|
| Gross if paid all 52 weeks | $98,800.00 | $79,040.00 |
| After tax | $76,664.00 | $63,227.20 |
| Weeks a casual must work to match $79,040 | 41.6 | n/a |
| Employer super (12%) | $11,856.00 | $9,484.80 |

*2026-27 resident rates, no HELP debt. Source: ATO.*

The casual role's $76,664 after tax needs all 52 weeks, while the permanent salary already includes paid leave and public holidays within those weeks.

A casual only earns in the weeks they work. At $1,900 a week, a casual reaches $79,040 after 41.6 weeks. Fewer weeks than that and the permanent role pays more, before counting sick leave or job security.

Weekend and public holiday shifts often carry higher penalty rates on top of the casual loading. The [penalty rates calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/penalty-rates-calculator/) shows how those change a week's gross pay.

## Salary back to an hourly rate when you work unpaid overtime

Divide your salary by the hours you actually work, not the hours in your contract. Unpaid overtime lowers your real hourly rate.

- **$42.50**: Contract hours, 38 a week (On a $83,980 salary)
- **$35.89**: Regular late finishes, 45 a week
- **$32.30**: Long-hours week, 50 a week (24% below the contracted rate)

*Effective rate = salary ÷ (hours × 52). Before tax.*

Super follows the pay, not the hours. Under Payday Super, the 12% is calculated on qualifying earnings, so unpaid hours earn no extra super either.

This matters when you compare a salaried job with an hourly or casual one. An hourly role at $38 that pays every hour can beat a salary that looks like $42.50 on paper.

## Hourly rates from $30 to $60 as annual salaries

| Hourly rate | Annual (38 hours) | After tax (38 hours) | Weekly take-home | Annual (40 hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [$30](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/30/) | $59,280 | $49,901.20 | $959.64 | $62,400 |
| [$35](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/35/) | $69,160 | $56,508.80 | $1,086.71 | $72,800 |
| [$40](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/40/) | $79,040 | $63,227.20 | $1,215.91 | $83,200 |
| [$45](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/45/) | $88,920 | $69,945.60 | $1,345.11 | $93,600 |
| [$50](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/50/) | $98,800 | $76,664.00 | $1,474.31 | $104,000 |
| [$55](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/55/) | $108,680 | $83,382.40 | $1,603.51 | $114,400 |
| [$60](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/60/) | $118,560 | $90,100.80 | $1,732.71 | $124,800 |

*2026-27 resident rates including the 2% Medicare levy, 52 paid weeks, no HELP debt. Source: ATO.*

Above $30 an hour, each extra $5 adds $9,880 to the annual salary on 38 hours. From $35 up, each $5 step adds $6,718.40 after tax, because those salaries sit in the 30% bracket above the $66,667 LITO cut-out. The step from $30 to $35 adds a little less, $6,607.60, because the low income tax offset still trims tax on $59,280.

$55 an hour sits just above the ABS full-time average of $2,083.70 a week, which is $54.83 an hour over 38 hours ([ABS Average Weekly Earnings](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/labour/earnings-and-working-conditions/average-weekly-earnings-australia/latest-release)).

## When the annual figure will not match

The calculator assumes paid hours stay the same every week of the year. Actual income will differ in these cases:

- Your hours vary from week to week, or you take unpaid leave.
- Overtime, penalty rates, allowances or bonuses are paid on top.
- You're casual and don't work all 52 weeks.
- You have deductions, other income, a HELP debt or the Medicare levy surcharge.

The annual figure also feeds these.

## Conversion questions: salary to hourly, payslips, 40-hour weeks, leave and 52.14 weeks

### How do I calculate hourly wage from annual salary?

Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. For a 38-hour week, that's salary ÷ 1,976. A $83,980 salary is $42.50 an hour. If you regularly work 45 hours for the same pay, divide by 2,340 instead and the rate falls to $35.89.

### How do I figure out my hourly pay rate from a payslip?

Divide your gross ordinary pay for the period by the ordinary hours it covers. Leave out overtime, allowances and penalty rates first. A weekly payslip showing $1,615 for 38 ordinary hours means an hourly rate of $42.50, which is $83,980 a year.

### How do I convert a yearly salary to hourly on a 40-hour week?

Divide the salary by 2,080, which is 40 hours × 52 weeks. An $88,400 salary on 40 hours is $42.50 an hour. The same salary on a 38-hour contract is $44.74 an hour, so check the hours before comparing two offers.

### Does an annual salary include public holidays and annual leave?

Yes, for permanent employees. A salary of $83,980 is paid across all 52 weeks, including paid leave and public holidays. Casuals aren't paid for those days, which is why their rate includes a 25% loading.

### Why do some calculators use 52.14 weeks?

Because a year has 365 days, which is 52.14 weeks (365 ÷ 7). Hourly workers paid for every day can earn slightly more. At $42.50 for 38 hours, 52.14 weeks gives $84,210.71, against $83,980 for 52 weeks. Salaried employees receive the same annual salary either way.
