Title: Salary Converter Australia: Pay & Salary Calculators
Last updated: 2026-11-07

This salary converter for Australia turns hourly, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or annual pay into every other cycle, before and after tax. On 2026-27 [ATO resident tax rates](https://www.ato.gov.au/tax-rates-and-codes/tax-rates-australian-residents), a $70,000 salary leaves **$57,080** a year after income tax and the 2% Medicare levy.

Gross pay is what your contract states. Net (take-home) pay is what lands in your account after PAYG withholding under the ATO's Schedule 1 formulas. Super guarantee of 12% is paid on top.

The salary tools below use 2026-27 rates and sit within our wider set of [Australian tax & pay calculators](https://calculatax.com/).

## Take-home pay by pay cycle

The same salary gives the same yearly tax whatever the pay cycle. What changes is how much your employer withholds each payday, because Schedule 1 converts every pay to a weekly figure, rounds it, then converts back.

| $70,000 salary | Gross pay | Take-home (annual tax ÷ periods) | PAYG withheld per pay | Take-home on payslip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annual | $70,000.00 | $57,080.00 | n/a | n/a |
| Monthly | $5,833.33 | $4,756.67 | $1,079 | $4,754.33 |
| Fortnightly | $2,692.31 | $2,195.38 | $498 | $2,194.31 |
| Weekly | $1,346.15 | $1,097.69 | $249 | $1,097.15 |

### Annual

Income tax on $70,000 is $11,520 and the Medicare levy is $1,400, a total of $12,920. That's an average rate of 18.46%. Each extra dollar earned above this point loses 32 cents to tax and Medicare.

### Weekly

Weekly pay is $1,346.15 and Schedule 1 withholds $249. The [weekly tax calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/weekly-pay-calculator/) runs the same formula on any weekly wage, including overtime weeks.

### Fortnightly

A fortnight's pay is $2,692.31 with $498 withheld, exactly double the weekly amount. Some years have 27 fortnightly paydays, which the [fortnightly tax calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/fortnightly-pay-calculator/) handles.

### Monthly

Monthly pay is $5,833.33 with $1,079 withheld. The ATO converts monthly pay to weekly by multiplying by 3 and dividing by 13, which is why a month is worth about 4.33 weeks. The [monthly salary calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/monthly-pay-calculator/) shows the result alongside super.

## Converting hourly, part-time and year-to-date pay

An hourly rate becomes an annual salary by multiplying by weekly hours, then by 52. Full-time is usually 38 ordinary hours, so $40 an hour equals $79,040 a year.

The [annual salary calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly-to-salary-calculator/) also works backwards, from salary to hourly rate. For quick reference, the [hourly to salary chart](https://calculatax.com/salary/hourly/) lists annual and after-tax figures for common rates.

### Part-time and year-to-date pay

Part-time pay is a share of a full-time salary. Someone working 22.8 hours in a 38-hour role is paid 60% of the full-time figure. The [pro rata salary calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/pro-rata-salary-calculator/) also handles a role that starts partway through the financial year.

Your payslip shows year-to-date gross and tax. Projecting those figures to 30 June with the [YTD calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/ytd-income-calculator/) gives an early estimate of your refund or shortfall.

## When your pay changes: rises, bonuses, overtime and weekend rates

A raise is taxed only at your marginal rate. The [pay rise calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/pay-rise-calculator/) compares old and new take-home per week, month and year.

- **$680**: What a $1,000 raise adds to take-home pay (On a $70,000 salary)
- **32 cents**: Of each extra dollar goes to tax and Medicare (At the same salary)

Bonuses and back pay have their own withholding rules. Under the ATO's Schedule 5, Method A spreads the payment across the year's pay periods. Method B covers back pay for specific pay periods and payments not tied to one period.

The [bonus tax calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/bonus-tax-calculator/) compares what's withheld with what you'll owe.

Overtime and penalty rates are paid at a multiple of your base rate under your modern award or agreement. The [overtime calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/overtime-calculator/) and [penalty rates calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/penalty-rates-calculator/) apply time and a half, double time and weekend loadings.

At $20,000 no tax is payable. The low income tax offset covers the tax, and income is below the latest announced Medicare levy threshold of $28,011.

## What sits between gross and net pay

Five items usually separate the salary in your contract from the amount on your payslip.

- Income tax at resident rates, reduced by the low income tax offset of up to $700 below $66,667.
- The Medicare levy of 2%, plus the Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5% for singles above $105,000 without private hospital cover.
- Compulsory HELP repayments once repayment income passes $69,528.
- Pre-tax deductions such as salary sacrifice, which lower taxable income.
- Post-tax deductions such as union fees or child support, which don't.

> Super is different. Employers pay 12% of qualifying earnings into your fund on top of your salary, within 7 business days of payday under Payday Super. A salary package that "includes super" holds the 12% inside the headline number instead.

## The average wage as a benchmark

Full-time adults earned $2,083.70 a week in ordinary time earnings in May 2026, according to [ABS Average Weekly Earnings](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/labour/earnings-and-working-conditions/average-weekly-earnings-australia/latest-release). That's $108,352 a year, or about $54.83 an hour over 38 hours.

The typical worker earns less, as the median figures for August 2025 show. The [average wage Australia per hour](https://calculatax.com/salary/average-wage-australia/) figures break this down by sex and show the after-tax result.

- **$1,741**: Median weekly earnings, full-time employees (August 2025)
- **$1,425**: Median weekly earnings, all employees (August 2025)
- **$26.44**: National minimum wage an hour ($1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, from 1 July 2026)

The minimum wage figures come from the [Fair Work Ombudsman minimum wage release](https://www.fairwork.gov.au/newsroom/media-releases/2026-media-releases/july-2026/20260701-minimum-wage-increase-media-release). Your modern award may set a higher minimum for your role.

## Salary questions: packages, super, the 38-hour week and payslip differences

### Is a salary package the same as a base salary?

No. A package, or total remuneration, usually includes the 12% super guarantee. A $70,000 package that includes super has a base salary of $62,500 and super of $7,500. A $70,000 base salary has $8,400 of super paid on top. Ask your employer which one an offer states.

### Is super paid on top of my salary?

Usually yes. Unless your contract says the figure includes super, your employer pays 12% of qualifying earnings on top. On a $70,000 salary that's $8,400 a year. From 1 July 2026 it must reach your fund within 7 business days of each payday.

### Why do salary converters assume a 38-hour week?

Because the national minimum weekly wage of $1,004.90 is set for a 38-hour full-time week. That week over 52 weeks is 1,976 hours. If your award or contract sets 40 hours, use 40, and $40 an hour becomes $83,200 a year.

### Does a salary converter show the same take-home as my payslip?

Close, but not to the cent. A $70,000 salary gives $1,097.69 a week from annual tax ÷ 52, against $1,097.15 on a weekly payslip. Schedule 1 rounds withholding to whole dollars, and your tax return settles the difference.
