Last updated: 2026-11-06

The monthly tax table for 2026-27 shows the tax withheld from monthly pay. On **$7,500 a month**, the withholding is $1,612 with the tax-free threshold and $2,089 without it. The [ATO guide to working out the weekly earnings](https://www.ato.gov.au/tax-rates-and-codes/payg-withholding-schedule-1-statement-of-formulas-for-calculating-amounts-to-be-withheld/working-out-the-weekly-earnings) converts monthly pay to a weekly figure (×3÷13), applies the formula, then multiplies by 13÷3.

The monthly table is one of three [ATO tax tables](https://calculatax.com/tax/tax-tables/) and suits salaries and director fees paid once a month. Amounts are PAYG withholding for Australian residents for tax purposes, including the 2% Medicare levy, for payments from 1 July 2026.

| Extra HELP/STSL withholding, scale 2 | $256 |

Change log: updated to the Schedule 1 formulas from 1 July 2026, which reflect the cut in the 16% rate to 15%. Monthly pay made after 30 June 2026 no longer uses the 2025-26 figures.

## Monthly withholding uses a 13-week quarter, not four weeks

Three months contain 13 weeks, so the ATO converts monthly pay with ×3÷13. Twelve months then line up with 52 weeks. Dividing by four would treat the year as 48 weeks and overstate weekly income.

1. **Convert to a weekly figure.** $7,500 × 3 ÷ 13 = $1,730.77. Drop the cents and add 99 cents: x is $1,730.99.
2. **Apply the weekly formula.** Scale 2 weekly withholding on that figure is $372.
3. **Convert back to a month.** $372 × 13 ÷ 3 = $1,612, rounded to the nearest dollar.

Dividing by four instead gives a weekly figure of $1,875, withholding of $419 and a monthly amount of $1,676. That's $64 a month, or $768 a year, more than the correct method.

> **One detail trips up spreadsheets.** If a monthly amount ends in 33 cents, the ATO adds one cent before converting. A salary of $4,333.33 a month is treated as $4,333.34, which converts to $1,000.00 a week instead of $999.99.

## Salaried staff paid monthly: checking the annual total

A $90,000 salary paid monthly is $7,500 a month, with $1,612 withheld each time. Over the year, that lands about $24 above the estimated tax and Medicare levy.

That check only holds when every month is the same, because each month is withheld as if it repeats for the whole year. A pay rise mid-year, unpaid leave or a bonus changes the annual total.

The [monthly salary calculator](https://calculatax.com/salary/monthly-pay-calculator/) shows take-home pay with super for any monthly amount, and the [PAYG withholding calculator](https://calculatax.com/tax/payg-withholding-calculator/) handles other pay cycles.

**A $90,000 salary over the year**

| Step | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax | | +$17,520 |
| Medicare levy | | +$1,800 |
| **Estimated tax and Medicare levy** | | **$19,320** |
| **Withheld over 12 months** | | **$19,344** |
| **Comes back at tax time, about** | | **$24** |

*No low income tax offset applies at that income.*

## Monthly HELP and STSL withholding

A HECS-HELP or other study and training support loan (STSL) adds a Schedule 8 amount, converted with the same ×3÷13 and ×13÷3 steps.

| Monthly earnings | HELP/STSL extra, threshold claimed | HELP/STSL extra, threshold not claimed |
|---|---|---|
| $4,000 | $0 | $0 |
| $5,500 | $0 | $182 |
| $7,500 | $256 | $485 |
| $9,000 | $481 | $706 |
| $11,000 | $784 | $1,044 |
| $13,000 | $1,127 | $1,300 |
| $17,000 | $1,699 | $1,699 |

*2026-27 Schedule 8 study and training support loan component per month. Source: ATO.*

At $7,500 a month with the threshold claimed, $256 is added each month, or $3,072 a year. The compulsory repayment on $90,000 of repayment income is $3,070.80 for 2026-27, so the monthly amounts track it closely.

## What the monthly table leaves out

The table covers equal monthly pay only. It doesn't model bonuses or commissions, salary sacrifice, reportable fringe benefits, the Medicare levy surcharge or a withholding variation. Payments for unused leave when you leave a job follow different rules.

Weekly figures before conversion are in the [weekly tax table](https://calculatax.com/tax/tax-tables/weekly/), and the [fortnightly tax table](https://calculatax.com/tax/tax-tables/fortnightly/) uses a simpler halve-and-double method.

## Monthly tax table questions: directors, bonuses and annual leave

### How is a director's fee withheld when it is paid monthly?

A director's fee paid each month goes through the same monthly method as salary. A $7,500 monthly fee has $1,612 withheld when the director has claimed the tax-free threshold with that company, or $2,089 when they haven't. Fees paid quarterly use the quarterly conversion instead: divide by 13, then multiply the weekly amount by 13.

### How is a bonus paid with monthly salary taxed?

A bonus isn't simply added to the month's salary. Employers use the ATO's Schedule 5 methods for bonuses and similar payments. Added straight to a $7,500 month, a $5,000 bonus would lift withholding from $1,612 to $3,302, taking $1,690 from the bonus. Method A in Schedule 5 spreads it across the year's pay periods, which usually withholds less.

### Is annual leave taxed at a higher rate in a monthly pay?

No. Annual leave taken during the year is paid as normal salary, so a $7,500 month of leave has the same $1,612 withheld as a working month. Withholding rises only when extra money is added, such as leave loading paid in the same month, or when leave is paid out on termination.

### How much tax comes out of $10,000 a month?

On $10,000 a month, $2,414 is withheld if you claim the tax-free threshold and $2,908 if you don't. Over 12 months, scale 2 withholding totals $28,968 on a $120,000 salary, close to estimated tax and Medicare levy of $28,920. A HELP debt with the threshold claimed adds $633 a month.
