Built on a 38-hour week

The National Employment Standards set maximum ordinary hours at 38 a week for full-time employees. That gives 1,976 paid hours a year. If you work 40 hours, multiply the hourly rate by 2,080 instead: $40 an hour becomes $83,200 rather than $79,040. The hourly to salary converter accepts any hours.

Casual rates vs permanent salaries

Casual rates include a 25% loading that replaces paid leave. A casual rate of $50 an hour equals a permanent base rate of $40, or $79,040 a year. Four weeks of paid annual leave are included in those 52 paid weeks. For an adult on the national minimum wage, the casual minimum is $33.05 an hour (Fair Work Ombudsman minimum wage release (opens in a new tab)).

How do I convert a part-time hourly rate to a salary?

Multiply the rate by your weekly hours and then by 52. At $35 an hour for 24 hours a week, that's $43,680 a year before tax, or about $39,375 after 2026-27 tax and the Medicare levy. The pro rata salary calculator works the same sum from a full-time salary instead.

Does the chart include overtime?

No. Every row counts 38 ordinary hours a week at the base rate. Awards often pay overtime at higher rates, such as time and a half or double time, so a week with overtime earns more than the chart shows. The overtime calculator adds those hours separately.

What is the minimum hourly rate in Australia?

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week (Fair Work Ombudsman minimum wage release (opens in a new tab)). Adult casuals on the national minimum wage get at least $33.05 an hour with the 25% loading. Award rates for your classification are often higher.
